Quick answer: To merge PDF files, add two or more PDFs to a merge tool, arrange them in the order you want and save the result as one file. Every page of every file is copied into the new PDF in that order. The free Merge PDF tool does this in your browser without uploading your documents.

When merging PDFs helps

Portals and reviewers often ask for a single file. Merging lets you send one PDF instead of several attachments and fixes the reading order for the person who opens it.

  • A job application with a CV, cover letter and certificates
  • A month of invoices or bank statements for an accountant
  • Chapters or sections exported separately from different programs

PDF is defined by ISO 32000. A PDF is made of page objects plus shared resources such as fonts and images, so a merge tool can copy whole pages from one document to another without converting them to images. Text stays selectable and vector graphics stay sharp.

How to use the free Merge PDF tool

  1. Open the tool and drag your files onto the box labeled Drop the PDFs to merge here, or click it to choose them. You can select several at once and add more later.
  2. Check the list. Files appear in the order you added them, with their size.
  3. Use the up and down arrow buttons to change the order, and the cross button to remove a file.
  4. Click Merge PDFs. The button is enabled once at least two PDFs are in the list.
  5. Click Download to save merged.pdf. The result line shows the total page count and how many files were combined.

Only PDF files are accepted. If you drop another file type, the tool skips it and shows Only PDF files were added. The merge runs in your browser with the pdf-lib library, and the files are not sent to a server.

What is copied and what is not

The tool copies every page of each file, in order, with its content, size and orientation. A landscape page stays landscape and a Letter page stays Letter even if the other files are A4.

Document-level items are not combined. The new file does not carry over the bookmarks (outline) of the source files, and document properties such as title and author are not copied. If you rely on bookmarks to navigate, add them again in a PDF editor after merging.

The tool merges whole files. To include only some pages from a document, split it first and merge the part you need.

Worked example: a job application pack

A portal asks for one PDF containing your CV, your degree certificate and your passport copy, in that order.

PositionFilePages
1cv.pdf2
2degree.pdf1
3passport.pdf1

You drop all three files, but they appear as passport.pdf, cv.pdf, degree.pdf because of the order you selected them. Move cv.pdf up once and degree.pdf up once, then click Merge PDFs. The result reads 4 pages from 3 files: pages 1 and 2 are the CV, page 3 is the certificate and page 4 is the passport.

Common mistakes

  • Merging password-protected PDFs. An encrypted file cannot be read, and the tool stops with a message telling you to remove the password first. Open the file with its password and save an unprotected copy if you are allowed to.
  • Not checking the order. The file picker does not always list files in the order you expect. Review the list before merging.
  • Exceeding an upload limit. The merged file is roughly the sum of the inputs. If a portal limits uploads to 2 MB, check the total size first, or split the pack into separate uploads.
  • Merging scans of very different sizes. Pages keep their original size, so a phone scan next to an A4 export can look uneven. Convert scans with a consistent page size before merging.

Tips for a tidy merged PDF

  • Name source files with numbers (01-cv.pdf, 02-degree.pdf) so they are easier to order.
  • Open the merged file and scroll through every page before sending it.
  • Keep the original files until the recipient confirms the merged PDF is correct.
  • If a document is a set of photos rather than a PDF, convert the images to PDF first, then merge.

Frequently asked questions

Are my PDFs uploaded when I merge them?+

No. The Merge PDF tool reads and combines the files in your browser. Your documents stay on your device.

How many PDFs can I merge at once?+

You need at least two. The tool sets no fixed maximum, but very large files use more memory, so a slow or older device may struggle with big batches.

Does merging reduce quality?+

No. Pages are copied as they are, so text remains selectable and images are not recompressed.

Why does the tool say my PDF is password-protected?+

The file is encrypted and cannot be read without its password. Remove the protection in a PDF reader, if you have the right to, and add the unprotected copy.

Are bookmarks kept after merging?+

No. Pages and their content are copied, but the bookmarks and document properties of the source files are not carried into the merged PDF.
